The fifa World Cup opener delivered pure chaos as Mexico edged south africa in a match defined by intensity, disciplinary breaks and clinical finishing.

The game was sheer dominance from Mexico as they were pushing high and forcing early errors signaling their intent in front of the home crowd.

It took Mexico no longer than 5 minutes to set up their first chances of the game at the Mexico City Stadium. Bafana held firm through key saves.

Julian Quinones scored the first goal of FIFA World Cup 2026 sending the stadium into eruption.

This is where it got crazy!!!!  

THE SECOND HALF

Jimenez broke through on goal and was brought down at the edge of the penalty area by Sithole, who was shown a red!!

The first of the tournament! This shifted the entire game in Mexico’s favour.

The resulting momentum gave the Mexico fans another reason to celebrate, Gilberto Mora was subbed in, within a minute the crowd erupted.

Jimenez scored Mexico’s second!

Jimenez, who suffered a skull fracture in the previous World Cup that nearly ended his football career, 4 years later returned to the biggest stage and delivered a goal at the World Cup.

The match got even more dramatic for South Africa when Themba Zwane was shown red, reducing them further to 9 men, ending their resistance.

Not only that, Mexico’s Centre-back Cesar Montes was shown red in stoppage time.

South Africa’s  goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves to keep the score respectable.

The match concluded with Mexico winning 2-0 on home soil with a display of rigorous attack and solid defence.


STAT:

Gilberto Mora became the 6th youngest player to make a World Cup appearance at the age of 17 years and 240 days.
