Debutants Cabo Verde held Spain to a draw in their first clash of the world cup 2026

Spain maintained a strong intensity throughout the match, but fell short in front of the goal.
Despite having 27 shots, and dominating possession, La Roja failed to break the deadlock,  eventually settling for 1 point.

Spain, despite having taken multiple shots, especially those with the likes of Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pedri and Cucurella, failed to make it onto the scoresheet. Very unexpected outcome.

Spain’s young star, Lamine Yamal made his world cup debut at the age of 18.

Introduced from the bench after recovering from an injury, he entered the pitch in the 75th minute.
He managed to increase the tempo of the game, posing a constant threat to the opponents defence.

However Cabo Verde remained composed and strong and did not give in to the doubts of others.

Cabo Verde produced a masterclass defensive display, blocking shots that came their way.

A nation with a population of over 500,000 residents, Cabo Verde created history as they managed to gain a point and a clean sheet.

Vosinha, The goalkeeper, at the age of 40 played his world cup debut match, ending it with a clean sheet and producing important saves.

With every passing minute, what looked like another Spanish victory was turning into frustration and disbelief.
All the names familiar yet their positions are so unfamiliar, and maybe that’s why the fluidity was missing, as Spain never quite looked like themselves.
Chance after chance came and went, but the scoresheet remained blank.

It might be a goalless draw with no winners in this match, but football was still the winner.

For this night belonged to the defence that threw themselves in front of shots and to a 40year old goalkeeper who waited a lifetime for his moment.

Moments like these are  not defined by how many points secured or how the story ends, what matters is the defence that never tires, the goalkeeper normally ignored or blamed.
Sometimes football celebrates effort, resilience and belief over goals.
